Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
