A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
